Winter Wonders in Aomori: From Lantern Festivals to Stove Trains

Hello, nature and culture enthusiasts! My winter journey to Aomori, Japan, was a beautiful blend of natural splendor and cultural festivities, offering experiences straight out of a fairy tale.

Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival

My adventure began at the Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival, held in February. The castle grounds transformed into a breathtaking display of light, with over 150 snow lanterns illuminating the night. This enchanting event, part of the '5 Michinoku Snow Festivals,' was a memorable experience in the chilly winter of Aomori.

Mount Hakkoda: A Skier's Paradise

Next, I visited Mount Hakkoda, a collection of stunning peaks offering some of Aomori's best skiing. With its surreal frozen trees, known locally as 'snow monsters,' the mountain presented a winter wonderland. The longest ski course spans 5,000 meters, weaving its way through these frozen marvels, a must-try for any ski enthusiast.

Oirase Gorge's Frozen Waterfalls

The Oirase Gorge was another highlight, known for its frozen waterfalls and icicles that create a mystical landscape in winter. The gorge, fed by Lake Towada, showcased nature's artistry with its frozen waterfalls, especially magnificent during the light-up tours at night.

Visitors could also warm up with hot drinks and snacks at small stalls set up along the trails, adding to the cozy and festive atmosphere. It was a time when locals and tourists alike came together to celebrate the wonders of nature and the beauty of winter.

A Ride on the Tsugaru Railway Stove Train

A truly unique experience was riding the Tsugaru Railway Stove Train. This train, heated by an antique cast iron potbelly stove, offered a cozy journey through the wintry landscapes of the Tsugaru region. The warmth from the stove was a pleasant contrast to the cold outside, making for a nostalgic and comfortable travel experience.

As I left Aomori, I was filled with warm memories of lantern-lit castles, snowy ski slopes, icy waterfalls, and the unique stove-warmed train ride. Aomori in winter is a place where cultural heritage and natural beauty come together in a magical way.

Until our next winter adventure,

Dr. Lena Hartley
