Auckland’s Secret Garden: A Homely Masterpiece

Kia ora, fellow art and travel enthusiasts! Today, I'm thrilled to recount a uniquely personal experience from my recent visit to Auckland, New Zealand. Beyond the city's galleries and public art, I discovered a hidden artistic treasure within the private garden of a local Auckland resident.

An Unexpected Invitation

My journey took an unexpected turn when I met a local couple at an art exhibit in the city center. Intrigued by my fascination with the interplay of art and nature, they kindly invited me to their home, situated in one of Auckland’s serene suburbs. What awaited me there was a remarkable display of natural artistry.

As I stepped into their garden, it was as though I had entered a living painting. Lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and elegantly designed water features were harmoniously arranged, creating a tranquil yet visually stunning scene. Every plant, every curve of the landscape, was intentionally placed, yet it all flowed with an effortless, organic grace.

The homeowners, avid gardeners, and art collectors, shared with me the story of their garden's creation. It was a labor of love, inspired by their travels and passion for both art and horticulture. As we strolled through the garden, they pointed out various sculptures and installations, each with its unique backstory, seamlessly integrated into the natural setting.

Sketching Nature’s Art

Captivated by the beauty and tranquility of the garden, I spent the afternoon sketching various scenes – a quaint stone bench under a canopy of blossoms, a reflective pond adorned with delicate water lilies, and a striking modern sculpture framed by ferns. These sketches, which I’ve included here, are my tribute to this private Eden.

This experience underscored for me how art isn’t confined to public spaces and galleries. It thrives in the personal realms of individuals who craft beauty in their surroundings. The warmth and generosity of my hosts, who shared their private sanctuary with me, added a rich, human dimension to my understanding of Auckland’s artistic spirit.

Leaving Auckland, I carried with me not just memories of a beautiful city but a deep appreciation for the personal, intimate expressions of art found in unexpected places.

Until our next artistic discovery,

Marco Valenti
