Jeju City: Pedaling Through Paradise

안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo) from Jeju City, South Korea! This island, renowned for its natural beauty and unique volcanic landscape, has been my latest adventure. I spent my days here biking around, exploring every nook and cranny of this idyllic paradise. Let me share with you the highlights of this picturesque island, along with a heartwarming encounter that made my trip even more special.

Biking Along the Jeju Olle Trail

Jeju City is a dream destination for cyclists, and I fully embraced this on the Jeju Olle Trail. This route wound its way around the island, offering breathtaking views of the coastline, lush countryside, and the majestic Hallasan Mountain. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the scent of the sea air were my constant companions as I pedaled through this slice of heaven.

The Majesty of Hallasan

Hallasan, a dormant volcano and the highest mountain in South Korea, was a sight to behold. As I biked towards it, the landscape transformed, revealing verdant forests and wildflowers. The peacefulness of nature here was a stark contrast to the bustling city streets I had left behind.

A Serendipitous Encounter

One of my most memorable experiences in Jeju City wasn't just the scenic beauty but a chance encounter with a local ajumma (a term of respect for an older woman). While resting near a small village, she approached me with a warm smile and, despite the language barrier, gestured for me to follow her. She led me to her garden, a little haven where she offered me a cup of traditional Korean tea and homemade yakgwa (honey cookies). We communicated through gestures and laughter, a reminder that kindness transcends language.

Embracing Jeju's Unique Culture

Jeju is not just about stunning landscapes; it's also rich in culture. I visited the Haenyeo Museum, dedicated to the island's female divers, an integral part of Jeju's heritage. Learning about these incredible women, who dive into the ocean's depths without any breathing apparatus, was an inspiring experience.

Farewell to the Island of the Gods

As I conclude my journey in Jeju City, I'm filled with gratitude for the natural wonders and the warm-hearted people I've encountered. This island, often called the 'Island of the Gods,' has left an indelible mark on my heart.

Until our next adventure, may you find joy in the journey and the people you meet along the way.

Warmly

Emily Chen
