Managua's Fiery Spirit: Volcano Boarding and Vibrant Streets

Hey there, fellow adventurers and thrill-seekers! As I find myself grounded amidst these new travel restrictions – a response to what I’m optimistically calling this little flu – I can't help but reminisce about one of my most electrifying escapades. Just before the world paused, I had the fortune of experiencing Managua, Nicaragua, a city pulsating with life and adventure.

The Allure of Managua

Managua, with its vibrant streets and warm, welcoming locals, was an immediate charm. The city, a mosaic of history and modernity, brimmed with stories waiting to be discovered. But the true highlight of my Nicaraguan journey was something quite extraordinary – volcano boarding!

Big Foot Hostel

My base was the famous Big Foot Hostel, a name synonymous with adventure in Managua. I chose it specifically for their legendary volcano boarding excursion, and, oh boy, it did not disappoint! The hostel itself was a melting pot of cultures and stories, a place where wanderlust found company.

One of my favorite aspects of staying in hostels like Big Foot is the incredible array of people you meet – fellow travelers from every corner of the globe, each with their own unique stories and cultures. It’s like a mini United Nations of adventurers and explorers. Sharing tales over communal dinners, exchanging travel tips, and sometimes even teaming up for parts of our journeys, these encounters are as enriching as the travel itself. The camaraderie and connections made in these shared spaces often turn into lifelong friendships. It's an experience that truly embodies the spirit of global community and cultural exchange.

An Adrenaline Rush Like No Other

Imagine this: you're perched on a wooden board, about to slide down the slope of an active volcano – it’s as crazy as it sounds! Cerro Negro, with its ashen slopes and commanding presence, was our playground. The rush of hurtling down the volcano was a cocktail of fear, excitement, and pure exhilaration. It was an experience that screamed adventure in every sense, something that I would recommend in a heartbeat to anyone seeking a thrill.

Reflecting Amidst Travel Restrictions

As I sit here, travel plans on hold, I can’t help but feel a pang of longing. The world is in a strange, quiet state, grappling with what seems like a significant health challenge. I’m hopeful, though, that this little flu will be a thing of the past by summer, and we can all get back to exploring the vast, beautiful world that awaits us.

My adventure in Managua, especially the volcano boarding, was a reminder of the joy and liberation that travel brings. While we may be momentarily stationary, the spirit of adventure lives on in our hearts and memories. Let’s hold onto that spirit, and when the world is ready to welcome us back, we’ll be there with open arms and restless feet.

Stay safe and keep dreaming,

Emily Chen
